Roberta Taliaferro Sensei began her martial arts study in 1972 in Karate while attending college. She trained in Karate for 7 years before beginning Aikido in 1986 with Cleveland Aikikai. She received shodan rank in 2001 from Mitsugi Saotome Shihan who also promoted her to nidan in 2006.In additon to Saotome Shihan, Taliaferro Sensei's influential teachers are Mary Heiny, and Frank Ostoff.
